According to Le Blanc, the featured print was the fourth plate in the Views of Dresden series. The composition is dominated by the Catholic Court Church of the Holy Trinity (Hofkirche), presently Dresden Cathedral. Located in the Old Town, adjoining the residence of the Wettin rulers, it was erected in 1758-1754 to a design by Italian architect Gaetano Chiaveri. Construction work started under Augustus III but the project was initiated by his predecessor Augustus II the Strong. The church’s sculptural décor is the work of Balthasar Permoser and the paintings for the interior are by Anton Raphael Mengs. To the left, the castle and its tower and the financial administration building are partially visible. On the right is the Augustusbrücke, the Elbe and the Japanese Palace on its right bank. On the left, the six-horse state coach is crossing the square, preceded by a pair of galloping horsemen and two men running behind them, with two horsemen riding behind the coach. Worthy of note is the artist’s virtuosity in conveying the dynamic movement of the galloping horses with just few strokes.
