Dębicki, Stanisław (1866-1924)

painter, illustrator, draftsman

Lubaczów 1866 – Kraków 1924
Although his style is not as characteristic and recognizable as the period’s leading painters, Dębicki’s multifarious pursuits contributed to the Polish art of the late nineteenth-early twentieth century. Educated in Vienna, Kraków, Munich, and Paris, he painted landscapes, genre scenes with Galician Jews and Hutsuls, and ventured into murals. He designed posters, books and bookplates, and even clothes, ceramics, and furniture. He taught art in Kolomyia and Lviv, and notably also in Kraków, at the Academy of Fine Arts and Maria Niedzielska’s School of Fine Arts. He divided his time between the fine and applied arts, this versatility reflected in his membership of the “Sztuka" [Art] Association of Polish Artists, the Vienna Secession, and the Society for Polish Applied Arts.
