Gionima, Antonio (1697-1732)

painter

Venice 1697 – Bologna 1732. He trained as a painter first under his father Simon (pupil of Cesare Gennari) and then continued with Aureliano Milani and Giuseppe Crespi in Bologna; he would later imitate the latter’s works. His art, representative of the academism of Bolognese school, is distinguished by the Venetian-style vivid treatment of colour and alla prima (direct painting) technique in which the final effects are achieved in the initial application of paint rather than by covering the canvas layer by layer.
