Lippi, Lorenzo (1606-1665)

painter

Florence 1606 – Florence 1665. Lorenzo Lippi trained as a painter and then collaborated with Mateo Rosselli (1622-1632). Although he had joined the Accademia del Disegno as early as 1630, he established his own studio after 1634. In 1643-1644, he worked at the court of Claudia Medici in Innsbruck. Inspired by Santi di Tito, he strove for the natural expression of his figural compositions without distracting from their trademark elegance and dignity. Under the influence of Artamisia Gentileschi and Giovanni Martinelli, he became one of the first Florentine painters to adapt Car avaggio’s treatment of chiaroscuro. Lorenzo Lippi was also a poet (pen name Perlone Zipoli) and together with Salvator Rosa they founded the combination of a studio and literary salon called Accademia dei Percossi (Academy of the Stricken)
