Mulier, Pieter, the Younger (1637-1701)

Haarlem 1637 – Milan 1702. He was the son of the marine painter Pieter Mulier the Elder. Through ca. 1655 he was active in Haarlem and the Netherlands emulating his father’s style. He then moved to Italy and from 1656 to 1668 was active in Rome where he collaborated with Gaspard Doughet got familiar with works of Salvator Rosa. He was then active in Genoa (ca. 1668; the years 1676-1684 he spent in a Genovese prison) and Milan (1685-1701). In the 1690s, he also executed commissions in Bergamo and Brescia. Influenced by Salvator Rosa, he rendered nature in the convention of ro mantic landscape pioneering the fantastic and dramatic formula in Italian landscape painting.
