Tobias returns home to Nineveh after an adventurous journey to find a cure to restore his father's eyesight. The angel watches over him, holds a tin with the healing bile of a pike caught in the Tigris. The scene is alluring thanks to the restrained atmosphere and the courtly elegance of the busts of the two young men. They are depicted against a dark background, focusing attention on the psychological action, expressed by their hands and heads shown in profile and en face. This seems to be the same face with the features seen in Lippi’s self-portrait.

This Florentine painter and poet, a graduate of the Accademia del Disegno (academy of drawing), worked for the Medici, among others. Together with his friend Salvator Rosa (1615-1673), they founded in Florence a literary academy (l' Academia letteraria dei Percossi), and was one of the first to adopt the chiaroscuro effects used by Caravaggio, also shown in works of Artemisia Gentileschi. The expressiveness of hands and eyes demonstrates the great technical mastery present in his sublime work. The wide popularity of the story of Tobias in art, also in literature and theatre, is easily explained by the then recommended journeys of artists, as well as young merchants, undertaken to gain professional experience.
