The portrait is based on the photograph of Jan Matejko taken at the atelier of Julian Mien and reproduced as a postcard in 1901. Using photographs as reference was a common practice among painters, not excluding the period’s most distinguished artists, like the Gierymski brothers Maksymilian and Aleksander.
